At the beginning of the 20th century, Kreshchatik Street was mainly built with two- and three-storey buildings. There were various shops, banks, offices, a stock exchange, post-office, hotels, movie theatres, restaurants, chemist's shops. Side by side with the electric trams, rumbled horse-drawn cabs which for a long peril remained a popular form of transport in Kiev.
